About the Event

An evening of conversation, inspiration and communication after the big IW Council Digital Island Conference. The 2018 Disruption is now over but we are busy planning the next one! Contact us to be a part of it. Digital Disrupt is an informal evening created by a group of volunteers from the digital technology industry on the island. With entertaining talks and discussions, and a bar open all evening, the event will be a chance to meet tech neighbours and business partners face-to-face, share ideas, talk about new projects and do some job-hunting. Businesses looking to explore new technology, or upgrade their existing systems, will have a chance to meet local suppliers and experts. The event follows on from the separate Isle of Wight Council Digital Island conference earlier in the day in the same venue.

Lucy Rogers
Inventor, Robot Wars Judge and dinosaur whisperer
I am a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, problem solver, maker and Judge on the recent series of BBC Robot Wars. I am an inventor and Founded the Guild of Makers. I also have a PhD in Bubbles (Fluid Dynamics), a City in Guilds in Woodturning and a Cycling Proficiency Certificate. My family make things – from spinning to woodwork, metalwork to embroidery. Making is such a integral part of my life that it was only recently that I realised I am a “maker” first and an “engineer” second. To me it’s like saying I’m 5’6″ or have blue eyes. It’s just part of what I am. But I’ve realised not everyone is encouraged to make or even know what a maker is. I aim to change that.
Andy Stanford-Clark
Internet of Things evangelist
Andy Stanford-Clark is the Chief Technology Officer for IBM in UK and Ireland. He is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Master Inventor with more than 40 patents. Andy is based at IBM's Hursley Park laboratories in the UK, and has a long background in Internet of Things technologies. He has a BSc in Computing and Mathematics, and a PhD in Computer Science. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Newcastle, an Honorary Professor at the University of East Anglia, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southampton, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society.
Mart Drake-Knight
Co-founder, Rapanui
Mart Drake-Knight, with brother Rob, is co-founder of ecofashion company Rapanui. They've grown the business to now occupy the old Co-op supermarket in Freshwater, constantly developing staff and providing opportunities to get into not just a fashion or production, but a tech business on the Island. Their years of campaigning around plastics and sustainability is well-known, but if you dig deeper in to the workings of Rapanui and the Teemill factory, you'll see a burgeoning team working on AI, automation and robotics.
